Investigations are underway to determine the cause of an explosion which blew a backyard garage to pieces as firefighters approached it on Monday afternoon.
Emergency services were called about 3.15pm to Maclaurin Ave, in East Hills in Sydney’s southwest, following reports of a fire.
As firefighting crews approached the garage it exploded, destroying the property, with the blast so strong it also smashed windows and ripped roof tiles from surrounding homes.
Eight fire trucks and more than 30 firefighters battled the blazing remnants of the garage for 40 minutes with the fire extinguished around 4pm, according to Fire and Rescue NSW.
Crews evacuated 10 people from the homes surrounding the garage, which was located in a complex nestled between houses.
The cause of the fire and subsequent explosion was being probed on Monday evening by the Fire Investigation and Research Unit, assisted by police investigators.
As of Monday evening there was no update on what may have caused the blast.
NSW Ambulance confirmed no one was treated for injuries at the scene.
Images from the blast site show adjacent homes with roof tiles ripped off from the force of the explosion, while a fence behind the garage was knocked down with debris from the shed covering much of it.
Video from the incident shows the brick garage, located behind several rows of houses in a complex off the street, laying in tatters with its wooden frame badly burnt.
