Police are investigating how a middle-aged man died near the rocks at a mid-north coast beach.
Newcastle Westpac Chopper officers were called at about 1.30pm yesterday to rescue a man whose body was lying in an inaccessible area at Seal Rocks.
“At the time it was unknown that the gentleman had already passed,” Newcastle Westpac Rescue helicopter base aircrew officer Glen Ramplin said.
“It was very difficult to carry him back to where he had set out from, so they called us. He was on a headland.
“This is obviously difficult for everyone involved. We’re professionals and there to do a job, but it’s difficult.”
Mr Ramplin said the windy conditions made it hard for the officers to carry out the operation.
“There’s a strong south-easterly and big seas so the rescue was reasonably tricky for the aircraft,” he said.
Crowds gathered to watch the emergency service workers bring the man’s body to the shore.
The death is being investigated, with police unsure about how the man’s body came to be on the rocks.
The man’s age and identity is not yet known.
