One of Sydney’s coolest suburbs is an inner-west hipster paradise today ranked the tenth hottest neighbourhood on the planet.
According to Time Out’s global survey, respondents praised Marrickville as “cool” because of its multicultural community, a wealth of bars and eateries and excellent levels of liveability.
.
It’s a far cry from 1895 when the area was first colonised and had runaway convicts hiding in the bush or swampland.
Since then, it has moved from a rough and tumble industrial wasteland to one of Sydney’s most gentrified suburbs.
Marrickville is home to Federal Labor opposition leader Anthony Albanese, a vocal supporter of the suburb’s world-class micro brewing industry and multicultural community.
It also boasts boxing champ Jeff Fenech and actor David Wenham among its favourite sons.
The fact that it is labelled the second coolest suburb in the country is no surprise to Inner West councillor Victor Macri.
“Marrickville is going through the roof – everyone wants to live here! We’ve got the nice jazz clubs, we’ve got the night-life, thanks to City of Sydney dropping the ball on that. Marrickville is a very nice place to be,” he said.
“We have the best public transport here, there’s buses, trains and even on the outskirts planes. It is a happening place with a good vibe. The people are cool and friendly here.
However he is aware the suburb is rapidly developing.
“I’m 56 and I have been here my whole life. There is a lot of gentrification which is happening now, I suppose that’s normal people want to be here,” he said.
“If we look back Marrickville has had a changing history. When I was young and you told people you were from here they’d run away!”
