Incredible images have captured an encounter with a shortfin mako shark off the coast of Sydney Harbour earlier this week.

The apex predator, widely known as the fastest shark in the ocean, is typically aggressive and unpredictable when hooked, often leaping out of the water and thrashing wildly.

But this mako, caught during a tuna fishing trip on Monday, stunned a crew of seasoned anglers by doing none of that.

Instead, the shark swam calmly to the boat, hovered just below the surface for several minutes and allowed time for remarkable underwater footage before biting through the line and swimming off.

Veteran fisherman Al McGlashan, who was out trolling for tuna when the shark appeared, said the encounter was unlike anything he’d seen.

“We got a bite, hooked up, and it didn’t do anything,” McGlashan said.

“We’re like, what’s going on there? And then suddenly we had a bit of weight on it—and then, pop, it’s a mako, pinned square in the nose.”

“Normally makos jump, race around and carry on. This thing literally swam straight to the boat and sat there. He just sat there for the camera, smiling, nudging his nose and stuff like that.”

Makos are known to hunt tuna and often take advantage of hooked fish, biting onto them as they’re being reeled in. But this shark, McGlashan said, “was so well-behaved” it felt more like a photo shoot than a catch.

Just as the team prepared to attempt a careful unhooking, the mako made its exit.

“All of a sudden he just went, had enough of this, shook his head, bit through the line and just cruised off.”
