Wentworthville arrest

The husband of a woman found dead inside their western Sydney flat yesterday has been arrested.

The body of 23-year-old Sabah Hafiz was found on Wednesday morning in a unit on Lane St, Wentworthville which Ms Hafiz shared with her husband, 24-year-old Adam Cureton.

Adam Cureton, 24, was arrested in Maroubra today.

Police said yesterday they held fears for Cureton’s welfare and detectives from both the Homicide Squad and Granville police command wanted to speak to him.

Officers tracked Cureton to Maroubra this morning where he was taken into custody, more than 24 hours after his wife’s body was found.

“Following inquiries, about 11.00am today police arrested a 24-year-old man at Astoria Court, Maroubra. The man was taken to Maroubra Police Station, where he is assisting with police inquiries,” police said in a statement.
Mr Cureton has not been charged with an offence.

It is understood Ms Hafiz had been badly assaulted and it is not believed a weapon was used.

“She was a good girl,” her father said when he arrived today at the property where his daughter died.

Clearly shattered at the news of his daughter’s death, Mr Hafiz spoke briefly to police at the scene before leaving in the company of another of his daughters.

In an online profile which Ms Hafiz set up to explore possible modelling opportunities, she said she “enjoyed being spontaneous”.

“I’m trying to get experience in this field and if I do get paid, that’s great too. It’s something I never thought about doing, but I do enjoy being spontaneous and trying new hobbies from time to time so yeah, really keen to do this,” she wrote.

One neighbour in the building described Ms Hafiz as a recluse.

“She didn’t really speak to anyone, she was an attractive woman,” the man said.

Police have set up Strike Force Palca to look into the death of Ms Hafiz.

Asked about the investigation yesterday, Cumberland Police Acting Superintendent Simon Glasser said “police are wanting to speak to a 24-year-old man”.

Forensic officers spent the day combing the unit block and speaking to neighbours who were in the building at the time of the death.
