McDonalds Eagle Vale carjacking sees driver held at gunpoint

Police are seeking an armed man who pointed a gun in the face of a driver in a McDonalds drive-through only to have the car he violently stole become bogged a short time later.

Police are hopeful the public will help them identify a “determined” carjacker who pointed a gun at a driver in a terrifying carjacking at a McDonalds drive-through in Sydney’s southwest.

CCTV shows a man wearing military camouflage, goggles and armed with a gun approach a 32-year-old man in his orange Hyundai Getz on December 20 as he drove through the Gould Rd, Eagle Vale, McDonalds at about 1.30am.

Detective Acting Inspector Graeme Napier said police believed the offender was “lying in wait” for about 30 minutes before approaching the victim and was “set up for the purpose” of stealing the vehicle.

“He was obviously dressed with the intention to do what happened, he’s got the face-mask on, he’s all dressed in black, and he’s got the ski goggles,” he said.

“We are confident that someone out there will recognize him and know who that person is.

“They will recognise those ski goggles and recognise the physique of the person in the images and video.”

Insp Napier said police were not yet sure what kind of hand gun the alleged offender used but said it was clearly a gun in the footage.

“It looks like he was determined on that day to conduct that offence,” he said.

Police said the attacker forced the driver out of the car at gunpoint before fleeing the scene in the vehicle and driving towards Dolomite Place.

The distraught driver alerted staff from the restaurant, who contacted police. He was not injured in the incident but was “very shaken up”.

The man is depicted as being of a caucasian appearance, slim build, dressed in all black, wearing ski goggles and a black face covering.

Later that morning about 2.50am, the Hyundai Getz was located bogged at Eagle Farm Reserve, Eagle Vale.

The Inspector said it was “amazing” the man had driven just 500m before getting the car bogged in a park, claiming the crime “wasn’t well thought out”.

“Despite lying in wait, his plans after that don’t seem to have come to fruition, so we have no real idea as to what he was going to do afterwards,” he said.

“The concern with the local community is that they are worried a man would go to this offence for no real purpose, we just want to track him down and find out what his intention was.”

Insp Napier said there has been no similar offences since December 20 and says the crime is unusual for the Campbelltown area.

“It’s a very rare offence especially for a situation like this where it’s a random offence, we want to get on top of it straight away,” Insp Naper said.
