The death of a man on the Hume Motorway was only discovered when a truck driver checked his dashcam footage two days after the accident.
David Howard died when he was struck by the vehicle in a horror accident at Campbelltown on Monday.
Tributes have flowed from family and friends since his death, with Mr Howard remembered as one of “the good ones”.
“We’re all going to miss you. The family is trying to hold it together but we (are) all crushed,” his cousin Robbie Gordon wrote on Facebook.
“I keep asking why do the good ones go early, but you will always be with us my cuz. We will meet again one day but until then we have to hold the rest of the family together.”
Traffic was thrown into chaos for several hours on Wednesday afternoon as police closed all northbound lanes of the busy motorway and set out on a search after receiving the truckie’s report about the possible fatal accident.
Officers soon located the human remains on the roadside and set about gathering forensic evidence.
The Daily Telegraph understands the truck driver told police he recalled the impact while driving on Monday but initially assumed he struck an animal, before raising the alarm when he checked the vehicle’s video camera and realised it was possibly a person.
An investigation is now under way into how Mr Howard ended up on the roadside.

Traffic remained heavy on the Hume Motorway for several hours after it was reopened as peak hour commuters slowly made their way home.
Diversions had earlier been put in place sending motorists off the motorway at Narellan Rd and onto Camden Valley Way or Oxley St/Campbelltown Rd instead.
At its worst the traffic queue was up to five kilometres long, taking it all the way past Menangle Park.
One person wrote on social media that it was “a pretty extensive operation. Many police cars”.
