James Ruse Agricultural High School has taken out the top spot as the state’s best academic school in the 2018 HSC results for the 23rd year in a row.

The school’s percentage of distinguished achievers however dropped almost 3 percentage points from 77.4 per cent of students in last year’s cohort to 74.7.

The school won three first in the state courses for three subjects: Chemistry, Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2.

Sydney Grammar School jumped this year to the state’s third best performing school from sixth last year. They received a record 11 first in course awards at last year’s ceremony.

Rankings based on the proportion of all rounders highest achieving students in the HSC.

The school has recovered after a rough year last year when a former teacher was accused of sleeping with a teenage schoolboy.

Baulkham Hills High School has slipped in the rankings from second last year to fifth.

Cherrybrook Technology High School fell from 68 last year to 81 this year, after the star mathematics teacher was taken out of the classroom earlier this year to be the state’s “master teacher” to travel across the state, mentoring students and other teachers.

Ascham in Edgecliffe dropped from ninth spot last year to 18th this year.

SCEGGS Darlinghurst dropped from 16 to 25 place.

Kincoppal at Rose Bay dropped from 28 to 44.

Kambala girls school at Rose Bay jumped from 18 th last year to 14th, despite the former principal launching legal action, suing the Anglican school and two of its teachers for $2 million in aggravated damages.

The 60-year-old principal, who was on a $650,000 annual salary, had resigned after at least 80 staff made a vote of no-confidence in her as principal.

The King’s School dropped from the 32 last year to 41.

Brigidine College Randwick was one of the biggest drops for private schools, plunging from 52 last year to 107th spot this year.

Al-Faisal College at Auburn jumped from 54 to 26 this year.

Al Noori Muslim School at Greenacre also jumped from 45 to 42.
