The ink has been signed on the biggest wage increase in NSW Police history, with members of the police union overwhelmingly backing a deal which will deliver pay rises of up to 40 per cent.

In a record turnout, more than 70 per cent of NSW Police Association members voted on whether to accept the NSW government’s wage offer.

More than 95 per cent of those members voted for the deal, which will deliver officers pay rises of between 22.3 per cent and a whopping 39.4 per cent. Across the entire force, the wage offer amounts to a 19 per cent increase over four years.

NSW Police Association President Kevin Morton said the pay rise is a “real generational change” for members.

This is professional pay that recognises the professional role of police officers for our state,” he said.

The pay rises will be paid for by overhauling a bloated injury compensation scheme which was set to cost taxpayers $900 million a year in premiums alone by 2027-28.

Police Minister Yasmin Catley said she was proud the offer was “so overwhelmingly endorsed”.

“It shows police that we value them, the work they do and the sacrifices they make.

“Police pay had been driven backwards for more than a decade; that ends today under a Minns government,” she said.

“Today is a historic day for police, I couldn’t be prouder.”

Here is how much extra NSW Police officers will earn by rank under the deal.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said it was a “great day” for officers.

“This historic deal will revolutionise the working conditions of our police, making them among the highest paid in the country,” she said.

The pay rise will be back dated to July this year with officers seeing the benefits shortly after Christmas.

“I am delighted officers have overwhelmingly embraced this offer. It certainly reflects their value and they are worth every cent.

“This is about recognising the intrinsic worth of our police who risk their lives to protect our community every single day.”

Ms Webb said the reforms bring sweeping changes beyond the pay bump.

“The new agreement also encompasses a consolidation of pay scales, a modernisation of allowances, formalisation of domestic and family violence leave arrangements, and an additional one-off bonus payment to select officers to recognise leadership and retention,” she said.

“It removes barriers to flexible work arrangements that will greatly assist police juggling a career and family commitments.

“We cannot afford to lose the critical level of experience across this organisation.

“This is about supporting the thousands of officers who cannot work full-time and ensuring they have enough flexibility to stay in the job.

“We cannot underestimate the importance of that experience to the community of NSW.”
