Transport to Western Sydney Airport is ‘crucial’

A ten-storey, 150-room hotel, gyms, shops and a conference centre will be among the first businesses to spring up around the new Western Sydney airport, under newly-revealed plans.

With less than three years until the Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) opens for international, domestic and cargo flights, designs for a new business park – aimed at housing and providing services to airport workers and the first visitors – have been released for public feedback.

The gateway to the new airport, built on land surrounding the facility, will include the 150-room hotel, as well as 25,000 square metres of warehouses and offices, a gym and a cafe.

The airport will seek the public’s feedback on the plans before pushing ahead with them.

WSI CEO Simon Hickey said the designs had been released with an eye to providing essential services to workers and businesses at the new airport ahead of it’s opening in 2026.

“While the airport and the connections to it are being built, there are thousands of workers across the runway, terminal, civil works, metro and M12 construction sites and they will be the first to use this precinct which will adapt to meet the needs of airport customers,” Mr Hickey said.

“Once the airport becomes operational in 2026, the precinct will welcome flight crews and international passengers, but we are leading the way by meeting the demand for shops, accommodation and offices, which is increasing as momentum builds.”

Mr Hickey added the major developments were part of attracting businesses to the precinct surrounding the new airport.

“Western Sydney International Airport is shaping up as a destination in its own right and we are making sure that we cater to local demand during the construction phase and as we grow to ultimately become Sydney’s biggest airport,” Mr Hickey said.

The plans, which will be on public display until July, are some of the most substantial to be lodged for the airport space.

The first stage of the works will include critical infrastructure like connecting roads to the rest of the aerotropolis.

It comes as work rumbles ahead on the new city of Bradfield springing out of the paddocks around the airport, which within two decades is forecast to include 11,400 new homes and more than 100,000 jobs.

The NSW Government has reiterated the new Sydney Metro-Western Sydney Airport Metro is on schedule to be opened by 2026, despite other lines on the Metro network experiencing cost blowouts.

The airport Metro will connect the aerotropolis to heavy rail at St Marys.

NSW roads minister John Graham also stood with federal NSW Senator Tony Sheldon at Badgerys Creek on Tuesday to mark the one-year milestone of construction on the M12 Motorway.
