Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds has confirmed his fairytale football club Wrexham will tour Australia this winter to play a midweek match in Sydney.
First revealed by The Daily Telegraph a fortnight ago, the visit will see the one-time battlers of British soccer – who are now just one step away from the English Premier League – take on Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on Tuesday, July 15.
Wrexham have become a global phenomenon after Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney bought the club in 2021 for $4 million.
They have embarked on a miraculous rags-to-riches march in just three seasons, all captured in a Disney docuseries “Welcome to Wrexham”.
Capturing the hearts of a massive global TV audience and attracting big-spending sponsors, the club is now valued at a whopping $200m.
“From the very beginning, we wanted to help make Wrexham a globally recognised team, town and brand,” Reynolds and McElhenney said in a joint statement confirming the three-game tour.
“We could not be more excited to bring the Red Dragons to Australia and New Zealand, and we are particularly proud that this announcement features neither a Men at Work or Hugh Jackman joke.
“The latter of which took maturity and tremendous restraint. Of course, we make no promises going forward.”
Wrexham, the third oldest professional football club in the world, will also play Melbourne Victory on July 11 and the Wellington Phoenix in NZ on July 19.
The “Down Under Tour” follows the club’s rise to the Championship with a record-breaking third successive promotion, confirmed last month after a 3-nil win over Charlton Athletic on the last weekend of the English season.
When Reynolds and McElhenney took over, Wrexham was in the fifth tier of competition. They head to Sydney within reach of the EPL, with a worldwide fan base, and on the back of a story even Hollywood would consign to fiction.
Sydney FC CEO Mark Aubrey said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Wrexham to Sydney. Their incredible story and continued rise has captured the imagination.
“Facing a team with such momentum, driven by the passion of Rob and Ryan, is a fantastic opportunity for our club and an amazing chance for our Members and the wider football community, to witness Wrexham and their award-winning docuseries first-hand.
“I’m looking forward to seeing Sydney FC and Hollywood glamour mixing.”
NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper said attracting the Welsh club was “a massive win” for the State.
“The global phenomenon that is Wrexham, driven by the passion of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, will draw huge crowds to Allianz Stadium,” he said.
“This tour showcases Sydney as a world-class sporting destination and will deliver a significant boost to our visitor economy. We’re ready to welcome the Red Dragons and their fans with open arms.”
Tickets will go on sale Friday through Ticketek, starting at $59 for adults and $39 for children.
