‘Falsified’ professor credentials: Inside the life of alleged Baulkham Hills killer Kwang Kyung Yoo

On social media, the martial arts instructor who allegedly murdered a family of three claimed he was a “senior professor” at Macquarie University. That’s news to the uni. It has ‘no record’ of him.

Family of man arrested over the Taekwondo killings

A martial arts instructor who allegedly killed three people posted a photo online of his application to become a ‘Distinguished Senior Professor’ at Macquarie University’s faculty Exercise and Sports Science, but the university has no record of him working there.

Taekwondo teacher Kwang Kyung Yoo claims on social media to be a Senior Professor at Macquarie University, and posted on social media the document supporting his bid for an even higher position.

According to the document signed in June 2022, to be eligible as a Distinguished Senior Professor at Macquarie, you must be employed at the university already as a Senior Professor and be “in the top 1%” of your chosen field.

However Macquarie has told The Daily Telegraph the document appears to be “falsified”, adding that “there is no record” of Kwang Kyung Yoo ever being employed at the university.

Additionally, the titles of Distinguished Senior Professor or Senior Professor “are not titles that we use”, Macquarie said.

‘SEEMED NORMAL’

It came as neighbours revealed Yoo is a married father with two children himself and was mowing his lawn just days ago, according to neighbours.

Taekwondo teacher Kwang Kyung Yoo has lived at his Kellyville home since at least 2019, with his wife and family, the neighbour said.

A neighbour of Mr Yoo said he saw the martial artists instructor gardening just days prior to his arrest on Wednesday over the alleged triple murder of Min, her husband Steven Cho and a seven-year-old.

“I saw him doing his lawns a few days ago on Saturday,” a nearby resident said on Wednesday morning.

“He seemed normal and he did his lawns like usual.

“He is usually very nice to us.”

The neighbour said that Mr Yoo and his family were quiet and often kept to themselves.

“I did notice some activity at the house yesterday (Tuesday) though,” he said.

The resident said Mr Yoo had mentioned his taekwondo business was struggling in the past year.

“He was telling me it was difficult especially after Covid,” he said.

Other neighbours said they knew of the Yoo family, but did not speak to them.

SURGERY

Police allege Mr Yoo bashed the woman and child to death inside his martial arts studio in North Parramatta before he drove the woman’s white BMW to Baulkham Hills and fatally stabbed her husband on Monday night.

He underwent surgery to his hands and arms on Tuesday night and was arrested when he awoke from surgery and is being questioned by police.

He is expected to be charged.

Police found Mr Cho, 39, stabbed to death at a Baulkham Hills home after a concern for welfare report about 10.30am on Tuesday.

A couple of hours later, officers found Mrs Cho, 41, and a seven-year-old boy bashed to death at Lions Taekwondo Martial Arts Academy.

Prior to police finding the three bodies, it’s alleged Mr Yoo, 49, presented to Westmead Hospital with stab wounds to his chest, arms and stomach.

He told police he had been attacked in the carpark of a supermarket on Church Street in North Parramatta.
