It’s the booming to-do list of major infrastructure projects set to shape how Sydney moves in the next decade.
The NSW Government has already committed to a $110 billion pipeline including major new road and rail links.
The Daily Telegraph runs the rule over some of the major projects either proposed or already underway around the city.
Metro West
Headlined by a planned 20-minute trip between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, work is underway on the 24-kilometre project linking Westmead to the city centre.
The line includes plans for stops at Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont and the Sydney CBD and plays a central role in the Greater Sydney Commission’s plans for a “30-minute city”.
It’s due for completion by the end of the decade.
Parramatta Light Rail stage 2
While track laying on the first stage of the Parramatta Light Rail is due to be completed this week, the future of the second stage of the rail – connecting Parramatta CBD to Sydney Olympic Park – is much less clear.
A final business case – which stipulates the second stage must have Aussie-made trams running on it’s tracks – is currently being undertaken by the government before a final decision is made on it.
M12
Construction on the main road linking the Western Sydney Airport with Sydney’s motorway network is set to begin halfway through this year and be completed before the international airport’s opening in 2025.
The $2b project will deliver drivers from across Sydney’s existing roads straight to the new airport.
Outer Sydney Orbital
Planning is still underway for the massive road project in Sydney’s west, to be dubbed either the M9 or M10, which will provide an “around the back” road link from Sydney’s northwest all the way down to the Illawarra.
Western Harbour Tunnel
Work is already underway on the early stages of the Western Harbour Tunnel, which will link the Rozelle interchange to North Sydney via an under-harbour tunnel.
However, a decision on the Beaches Link project – which will connect the Warringah Freeway to suburbs in Sydney’s north including Balgowlah – has yet to be locked in, with Labor pledging to scrap it if elected.
Metro Western Sydney Airport
Due to open in 2026 to coincide with the takeoff of the airport, the new line will play an important role in connecting the rapidly developing aerotropolis of Bradfield with wider Sydney.
Six new stations have been locked in to serve the 200,000 new jobs expected to come to the aerotropolis – with the line running from the airport to St Mary’s, where it’ll interconnect with new and existing rail networks to the rest of the Sydney.
Rozelle interchange
Drive anywhere near the Balmain peninsula and you won’t be able to miss the massive work underway to create the Rozelle Interchange.
The development will connect the extended M4 and the New M5 to the Anzac Bridge and Victoria Road in Sydney.
