On the surface it looks any one of the many photos of David Breckenridge. It shows the happy disposition that those close to him loved so much about him. But the truth of this photo is that it was taken on the same day he was murdered.
A friend pointed the camera at David as he prepared to leave his flat for a double shift as a barman in the city.
The 28-year-old was already feeling worse for wear, the remnants of extensive celebrations for his birthday the night before.
David had already made plans to continue the festivities after his shift. He was due to meet up with friends in Kings Cross.

But he made a last-minute change of plans which he told to a small group.
David decided he would instead finish work and head to best mate Phillip Noyce’s place. The two, friends from their days at the prestigious Barker College, were made rugby fans and made plans to watch the Tri Nations clash between South Africa and New Zealand at Phil’s place in St Leonards.
After finishing work he headed to St Leonards and stopped in at the St Leonards Tavern. There he was filmed on CCTV picking up a sixpack of beer. A gift from the manager for his birthday,
David then left and phoned Phil from a payphone.
“He said, Noycey it’s me, i’m comiN over. I’ve picked up a sixpack and i’ll be there soon”,” Phil Noyce said.
But he never made. Just eight minutes after the pay phone call David was attacked and stabbed to death in a laneway. His murder has never been solved.
The Daily Telegraph is shining a light on this cold case murder through its exclusive podcast special investigation Eight Minutes.
The five-part series reveals, at one level, the seemingly normal life of a young man with the world before him tragically cut short in a few short minutes of almost inconceivable violence.
It also uncovered a world of drinking and recreational drug use, one-night stands and a love triangle suggested revenge as the killer’s motive, which was ultimately ruled out.
The Daily Telegraph can also reveal startling new evidence that raises questions about the police’s handling of the case.
