Australia’s two big hopes in today’s Oscars, Lion and Hacksaw Ridge, are rank outsiders to beat the Ryan Gosling blockbuster La La Land for best picture but they are at shorter odds to snag a minor award.
The markets are feeling plenty of love for Damien Chazelle musical La La Land, which is enjoying miserly $1.17 odds in both the best picture market and for Emma Stone to take best actress.
But Mel Gibson’s moving war flick Hacksaw Ridge is a steaming hot favourite to win best sound editing ($1.50) ahead of La La Land ($3.75).
The awards begin at 12.30pm Sydney time.
Director Garth Davis’ Lion, about an Australian man’s heartbreaking search for his Indian family, is a whopping $51 to win best picture, while Hacksaw Ridge is paying $101, according to Sportsbet.com.au.
Hacksaw Ridge is also nominated for best sound mixing ($9.50), best film editing ($6), Gibson for best director ($51) and Andrew Garfield for best actor ($34).
Lion is also nominated for best cinematography, where the markets give it a $8 chance behind leaders – wait for it – La La Land on $1.20.
It’s four other nominations are Dev Patel for best supporting actor ($5.50), Nicole Kidman for best supporting actress ($34), best original score ($17) and best adapted screenplay ($9).
Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea is narrowly leading the best actor market ($1.67) over Denzel Washington ($2.10) and his efforts in mid-century drama Fences.
Natalie Portman is the only name likely to bother Stone for the best actress title and punters have only rewarded her with $6 odds.
Coming-of-age hit Moonlight features heavily on the markets, where Mahershala Ali is a $1.12 favourite to take best supporting actor.
And Viola Davis looks to have sewn up the best supporting actress market, paying just $1.02 for her performance in Fences.
