Great Western Highway in Blue Mountains closed after woman, child injured in crash

A woman and child have suffered serious burns after a car and truck collided near the Blue Mountains on Monday morning, closing the Great Western Highway.
The major road at Katoomba remained closed after the crash at 6.30am and drivers face significant delays.
Emergency services were called to the Great Western Highway near Explorers Road following reports a truck and car collided.
NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry said bystanders scrambled to free the occupants of the burning car shortly after the collision.
“The car bounced off the side of the road into a paddock,” Superintendent Dewberry said.
“Other motorists got the occupants out of the car before crews arrived and extinguished the wreckage.”
Motorists have been advised to avoid the area and use Bells Line of Rd while emergency services clear the area.
NSW Ambulance were on the scene and rushed the woman and child to hospital.
“Paramedics are treating two patients after a truck and car collided,” a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said.

“We have a woman in her 30s and a child under 10, the woman was taken to Westmead Hospital with multiple injuries and the child was flown to Westmead Children’s Hospital in a serious condition by rescue helicopter.”
A third person, a woman in her 40s, was taken to hospital with minor burns.
She was a bystander who rendered assistance after the crash.
Traffic on the Great Western Highway is banked back 2km in both directions.
Sydney-bound motorists are being diverted via the Darling Causeway and Bells Line of Rd, The Northern Rd to join the M4 Mwy.
Westbound motorists travelling between Sydney and Lithgow can use The Northern Rd or Castlereagh Rd to Richmond. Join Bells Line of Rd, Darling Causeway (for Mt Victoria) or Chifley Rd to re-join the Great Western Hwy.
Westbound motorists in the Blue Mountains can use Hawkesbury Rd, Springwood Rd, Bells Line of Rd, Darling Causeway (for Mt Victoria) or Chifley Rd to re-join the Great Western Hwy.
