When the Daily Examiner first reported tonnes of earth was covering half the street, Clarence Valley Council deputy general manager Rob Donges said consultant engineers had advised the council to leave the slip across the road to reinforce the area.

So Mr Donges was excited yesterday to reveal reinforced sheet steel piling will be driven into the ground to stabilise the area, allowing the road to be cleared.

"That will be a temporary arrangement until such time as we receive our disaster funding," he said.

Under the funding guidelines only minor work could be done until the council received the funds from the Government.

"When we get the funding we have got a structural engineer who is designing a gabe block wall, a porous concrete block wall about 60m long so we can stabilise the whole area there."

Mr Donges said the wall had been designed to avoid another landslip.

"We needed something that we could get a good level of drainage behind it, but also have a level of porosity so that water doesn't build up again and create another problem."

Mr Donges said there had been no damage to surrounding properties from the landslip.
