INTERNATIONAL stars Dirtgirl and Scrapboy are on their way to Yamba this weekend.
Both proud ambassadors of Clarence Valley Council's new waste management scheme, the dynamic duo will entertain young and old at the Yamba River Markets, performing songs and posing for photos.
But there's a serious message behind the fun.
Dirtgirl and Scrapboy, together with their creators Cate McQuillen and Hewey Eustace, will lend a helping hand to Mayor Richie Williamson and council staff as they officially launch the valley's new waste management scheme.
Ms McQuillen said she had spoken with the stars that, like their creators, are very keen to share council's vision with the community.
"Being an ambassador of composting, Dirtgirl is very excited about council's new approach to waste management," she said.
"And Scrapboy, who is visiting the Clarence Valley for the first time, loves recycling; it's a really good match."
Ms McQuillen said that while it's a daggy old mantra, thinking globally and acting locally was a concept that was very important to uphold.
"It's imperative that we keep valuable waste, like compost and items that can be recycled, out of landfill.
"Putting our waste in the right place will put the community in a much better position, environmentally and economically."
The official launch will kick off at the markets, Ford Park, tomorrow from 9.30am and is a great opportunity for the community to ask questions and get to know the ins and outs of the new system.
Of course, the kids are going to be excited about meeting the big stars in person and there will be plenty of photo opportunities.
The new waste management system, which includes new green and yellow bins and a re-jigged collection schedule, will begin form July 30.
