IT'S that time of year again, and the 2020 Clarence River Jockey Club July Carnival is in full swing.

RACE 8 - Snowden double ends Ramornie day on winning note for Sydney trainers

CALIFORNIA Longbow ($2.90, Andrew Adkins) won the last at Grafton to cap off a successful Ramornie Handicap Day for the Randwick based Peter and Paul Snowden stable.

The four-year-old gelding scored his fifth win from 19 starts after shaking off Kris Lees trained $2.50 favourite Chilly Cha Cha (Jason Collett) to win the Shirley Adams OAM Remebrance Rural Plate Class 6 (2200m) by a length, with Stephen Lee trained Polemic ($17, Grant Buckley) third.

Trainers Peter and Paul Snowden earned back-to-back wins when they followed their Ramornie Handicap success up with a win to California Longbow in the Shirley Adams OAM Remembrance Rural Plate - Class 6 Showcase.

RACE 7 - Signore Fox storms home for Ramornie Handicap win

WHILE all eyes were on the Peter and Paul Snowden trained Hightail, stablemate Signore Fox charged through a strong field late at the line to take out the 2020 GDSC Ramornie Handicap.

RACE 6 - Reus overcomes pre-race nerves in Grafton Guineas

REUS was touch and go to be scratched at the gates before the start of the $80,000 Tursa Grafton Guineas.

But despite misbehaving behind the stalls including knocking down a barrier attendant, the Michael Costa trained gelding was able to eclipse a competitive field in the July Carnival's three-year-old feature.

After some early trouble in the barriers before the race started, Michael Costa trained Reus stormed home late to take out the $80,000 Tursa Grafton Guineas (1600m).

RACE 5 - Eighth Immortal lives up to its name

HAWKESBURY trainer Mitch Newman is having a July Carnival to remember after Eighth Immortal edged Matt Dunn frontrunner Our Echo in race 5.

The Kensei Club Returning in 2021 GC&E Class 2 Showcase Handicap 1100m was Newman's second win from two starts at the carnival after clinching victory with Debrief on South Grafton Cup Day.

RACE 4 - Toto makes ultimate comeback

THERE was plenty of buzz about Toto after the three-year-old romped home to win the $40,000 Jacaranda Hotel Country Showcase Maiden Plate by a length at Grafton on Wednesday.

But it wasn't by how much, but rather how, the $1.90 favourite ridden by Grant Buckley achieved the win that got chins wagging, having badly missed the start of the 1000m sprint.

RACE 3 - Trainer makes a winning return after eight year absence

MITCHELL Fry has only just made a comeback to training after an eight-year absence but Flash Ahh continued the successful return when he won his third from five starts in race three at Grafton on Wednesday.

Taking on a strong field on a damp track in the Grafton Taxis Showcase Benchmark Handicap 1400m, the four-year-old gelding took the cake in a photo finish.

RACE 2 - Rexx earns Armidale trainer a rare July Carnival win

WHILE his namesake Rex Airlines stopped flights in and out of Grafton last Friday, there was no stopping the four-year-old gelding Rexx delivering a fly-in, fly-out special on Ramornie Handicap Day at Clarence River Jockey Club.

The topweight $4.60 favourite led from start to finish out of barrier six to claim the Winning Edge Presentations 4YO&Up Showcase over 1600m, handing Armidale trainer Ian Cook his first July Carnival success.

This year's field of runners for the GDSC Ramornie Handicap is among one of the strongest in recent memory.

RACE 1 - Winning start to the day for Kris Lees

Australian racing powerhouse Kris Lees had the perfect start to Ramornie Handicap Day in Grafton after Illecebrous snatched a result from heavy favourite Divine Approach.

Rain peppered the track at the Clarence River Jockey Club as runners lined up for the $30,000 Group 1 Horse Feeds F&M Class 2 Showcase Handicap 1100m sprint but it was the three-year-old Lees-trained filly pipping Grafton's Dwayne Schmidt at the line.

With coronavirus restrictions still in place, the July Carnival may have a different feel to years past, but that doesn't mean the racing action will be any less than exhilarating.

If you're a member of the CRJC and haven't got a ticket, the club's chief executive officer Michael Beattie said the club was considered a major sporting facility under NSW Health rules, and would be allowed to run events at 25 per cent of the club's capacity.
