WOODY Jack turned back the clock to score a perfect 10-point wave on one's the world's premier surf breaks on Saturday.
Jack was competing for Angourie Boardriders in the 31st annual Kirra Teams Challenge. His wave, which featured a vertical drop into a long barrel, then a long pit followed by three hacks, ensured he won his heat.
"Just a nice Kirra barrel," Woody said.
"Came out did a few turns and got the score. I was stoked."
It was the first time Angourie had competed in Australia's biggest team surfing event since 2002, and visions of the all-conquering 2001 event quickly came flooding back.
"We won in 2001, finished dead-last in 2002 and hadn't competed since," Woody, who is also the club's vice-president, said.
"So to not compete in 12 years and finish third, the boys surfed really well. We're just firing the club back up and that's a really good result." Thirty-two teams of eight riders were ranked on their best two waves in 20-minute heats of four and points allocated according to their position.
The surfboard shaper was one of five Angourie team members to win their heats.
Woody Jack (1st, 15.83) and Navrin Fox (1st, 14.84) are the only remaining members from the 2001 team.
They each won their heats along with the two youngest members, junior riders Jeames Young (1st, 16.10) and Chris Zaffis (1st, 13.94). Conditions dropped off on Sunday, but Dean Emery (1st, 6.50) still managed to top his heat. No such luck however for Jesse Buder (4th, 2.73), Zane Byrne (3rd, 4.57) and Dean Bradley (4th, 9.23).
Merewether took out the event with 30 out of 32 possible points, Coffs Harbour was second on 27 and Angourie in esteemed company on 26.
For their efforts Angourie won a $1500 cheque and next year's $600 entry free waived.
