FORMER NRL star Jarryd Hayne's career in American football could be over after being released from the San Francisco 49ers.
Some had predicted Hayne would get more game time following an injury to star running back Carlos Hyde.
But the ex-Parramatta Eel was not part of the squad to face the St Louis Rams with coaches opting to promote Kendall Gaskins from the practice squad and he has now been told he is surplus to requirements.

After a promising preseason, Hayne had small roles in six regular-season games with mixed results.
Hayne's agent Jack Bechta took to Twitter, saying the rising star would be back to work early this week.

He had eight carries at running back for 25 yards, but made mistakes as a punt returner, with fumbles against Minnesota, Green Bay and Baltimore.
Now on waivers, any of the 31 remaining NFL teams can take Hayne on.
If he clears waivers he could be added to a practice squad.
