"THIS guy knows what he is doing". They were the words of experienced San Francisco 49ers commentator Ted Robinson when describing the exploits of former rugby league star Jarryd Hayne, who continues to impress in his new code.

Hayne's team lost its third trial, 19-12, to the Denver Broncos in Colorado, and the former Parramatta star saw limited opportunities in just his third game of gridiron.

But for the third successive week, he furthered his claims to make the 49ers' 53-man roster, set to be named on September 6.

Robinson used the above glowing description of Hayne when he made an impressive catch from stand-in quarterback Blaine Gabbert, for an 18-yard gain in the fourth quarter.

That was the former fullback's highlight of the game.

But earlier he produced a game-high 12-yard effort on his solo punt return. In doing so, he outdid 2005 Heisman Trophy winner and teammate Reggie Bush.

On Bush's second punt return, he let the ball drop and roll to three yards out, contrary to the confidence and attacking flair Hayne has shown in that position.
