THE Hayne Plane is still airborne according to former Australian gridiron player Jason Thompson.

Better known these days as a former South Services fast bowler who joined the Clarence River District Cricket Association Umpires ranks this season,Thompson was a specialist cornerback and strong safety in his hey-day and represented his country from 1990 to 1992.

He said Hayne had a lot to gain from his rookie season in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers.

"I actually think he's had a very good toe in the water so to speak," Thompson said.

"It was unfortunate he got dropped from the squad halfway through the season, but really the NFL as a professional sport over there is extremely fickle. There's always people coming in and out of rosters.

"You've got to remember he's playing against guys who have been playing it all their life. Things come naturally for them which he's got to learn.

"I think he has done a fantastic job and he's not done yet."
