Local businesses are giving residents a leg up as the housing crisis continues throughout the region.
With demand outstripping supply for rental accommodation across the Clarence Valley, real estate agent Allison Whaites has been working with local pubs, including Walkers Hotel and the PO Hotel, to help ease the rising homelessness problem.
“These places have agreed to offer week-to-week crisis accommodation for anybody, for as long as they need with another pub about to sign up,” she said.
“They have all kinds of rooms, such as two lots of bunk beds to queen size beds, to two-bedroom apartments.”
Ms Whaites said the process was not as rigorous as a traditional rental application process.
“All they have to do is fill out one document, bring some identification, then they pick out a room, get the key and that’s it,” she said.
“So long as everyone does the right thing, this initiative will also give residents a rental history and a tenant ledger to prove they’re paying rent on time, both of which help a lot when looking for a future rental.
“Everybody deserves a second chance.”
Ms Whaites said anyone interested in securing accommodation can either visit her real estate agency at 67 Spring St, South Grafton between 9 -10am weekdays, or call to book an appointment on 0487 289 471.
