A South Grafton house has been gutted by fire, with investigations now underway to determine the cause of the blaze.

Emergency services responded to the fire in Maxwell Ave, South Grafton about 2pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Fire and Rescue NSW South Grafton captain Paul Danvers said when fire crews arrived they found the home fully alight, with flames and smoke coming from the front and back windows.

“The fibro dwelling was fully involved in fire when brigades arrived,” he said.

“We responded with three fire trucks and we were able to put fire out in 30 minutes, however we had to set up a HAZMAT zone because of the asbestos fibro building of the house.”

A NSW Police Force spokeswoman has confirmed the blaze is being treated as suspicious, and an investigation by both NSW Police and Fire and Rescue NSW is underway.

Mr Danvers confirmed there was no-one at the property at the time of the fire, however the house is an occupied dwelling.

“(It was a) good response, firefighters from Grafton and South Grafton responded very quickly,” Mr Danvers said.

A neighbour Sandra Carroll-Lee said police had been doorknocking in the area earlier in the day investigating an alleged break and enter on the same house before the fire started.

“Next thing I happened to be out the back and a chap two doors down said there was fire and smoke coming out the house next door. It was pretty scary, the flames were shooting out and I thought ‘God’,” she said.
