Police, Marine Rescue, surf lifesavers search for missing swimmer at Angourie

A search is underway for a swimmer described as having short hair and possibly wearing a dark wetsuit.

Police and emergency services have scoured the waters near Angourie searching for a missing swimmer.

At approximately 6.45am on Thursday, police were called to the vicinity of Durrangan Lookout and Woody Bluff at Angourie, south of Yamba, after a woman reported seeing a swimmer in the water before losing sight of them a short time later.

A search operation was commenced by Coffs/Clarence Police District officers, Marine Area Command, Marine Rescue, NSW Surf Life Saving and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, however no one was located.

A spokesman for Marine Rescue NSW said their crews were assigned to search the shoreline in the area, however were stood down later in the morning.

At this stage, no missing persons report has been received, and no other property was located on the beach, at nearby campgrounds or along the coastal walking track.

The swimmer is described as having short hair and is believed to be wearing a dark wetsuit.

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed a swimmer in distress or who may have been out swimming this morning is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
