A South Grafton woman has warned other homeowners to be vigilant after being targeted twice in the same night by thieves.
On the evening of July 13, Justine Webber and her family returned home to find their house had been broken into and one of their cars stolen.
“We first noticed that the side gate was open, which it never is,” Ms Webber said.
“My partner went out the back to see if anyone was there, went up the back steps and saw the pet flap and door destroyed. He went inside and soon realised that all the keys, including house keys, car keys, were gone. One of our cars was missing too.”
The stolen car is a ceramic blue Hyundai Kona with registration plates EAA38X.
Fortunately, the incident was captured on CCTV security footage. But to Ms Webber’s surprise, the people on the footage appeared to be the same individuals she had spoken with out the front of her property shortly before the alleged theft.
“At around 4.30pm, we were putting the dog in (another car) when some people walking down the street stopped and said how pretty our dog was and chatted to us about the dog before they kept walking down the road,” she said.
“After we drove off down the street, I noticed that they turned around and started walking back up the street toward the house.”
With the spare keys to the second car stolen, Ms Webber said they attempted to prevent the second car from being taken.
“We went as far as hooking the trailer to it and locking that down, and even put garbage bins in front of the car,” she said.
“Much to everyone’s surprise they turned up just after midnight and stole the second car. Our tactic did nothing but made it louder when they took off out the driveway.
“In retrospect we should have just disconnected the battery.”
The second stolen vehicle is a brown Mitsubishi Outlander with registration ENO45X and an 8x5ft box trailer with cage attached, registration TR26TR.
The second incident was also captured on CCTV camera which was handed to Coffs-Clarence Police who have confirmed they are investigating both incidents.
Ms Webber has since had all locks changed and the back door replaced.
Anyone with any information about the two incidents is encouraged to contact Grafton Police on 6642 0222 or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000. Information can be obtained anonymously.
