‘The boy was screaming for his father’ after shock shooting”
The sounds of a 15-year-old boy screaming for his father rang out across a South Grafton neighbourhood after he was shot on Saturday night.
Two days later, the scene was quiet. Many weren’t willing to talk about the incident that closed off a section of the Camelia Way cul-de-sac for hours.
Those that were willing to speak said they heard yelling coming from a nearby house and people running up and down the street in a fight.
“Then there was a sound like a whip crack – there were three shots,” one nearby resident said. “And we just got down and stayed inside.
“The cops were here within 10 minutes and just shut the street down.”
Another nearby resident said she hadn’t heard the shots, but came outside to a commotion in the street.
“There were people running up and down the street screaming ‘He’s dead! He’s dead!’ and all sorts of things,” they said.
“Then I could hear the boy just screaming out for his father … probably for about 15-20 minutes.”
“It was just frantic,” another woman said. “It was pretty scary.
“I heard the shots and I just told everyone to get down and locked my doors.
“We just stayed down the whole time.”
Many who lived near the street said the area had its troubles in the past, with many rowdy parties and crimes in years gone by, but it had settled down over recent times, with only minor incidents from time to time.
Police confirmed the 15-year-old boy sustained a gunshot wound while his father was left with head injuries following an argument in the house around 8pm on Saturday night.
On Sunday night police said the boy and his father were in a stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.
Tactical police and negotiators surrounded the Hilldrop Motel, west of Grafton on the Gwydir Highway on Sunday for four hours following tips from the public.
Other guests were evacuated to a safe space in the motel until police determined that the man of interest was not in the room.
The search for the man continues, and they urge anyone with information relating to the incident call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
