In a situation the magistrate described as “a hard road”, a woman’s parole has been revoked after just three days out of jail.
Nowra woman Jade Maree Nykolyn, 39, told Grafton Local Court she was “too old for this” as she cried during proceedings on Monday.
Nykolyn had been released from Clarence Correctional Centre on January 24 but was caught on CCTV footage stealing a set of master keys from the Heritage Motor Inn in Bent Street, South Grafton, just three days later.
She then opened a room and took a shower before returning to reception to steal $165.
Nykolyn’s solicitor Jason Hatch told the court his client’s theft, trespass and enter a building offences were because she had limited support on her release from jail.
He said she had written a letter apologising not only to the court but to the businesses involved.
Magistrate Kathy Crittenden noted that upon her release from jail, Nykolyn was struggling with where to go, where to stay and where to get food.
She said Nykolyn was a mother with a 20-year-old child and had previously been incarcerated for several years.
“You are still under 40 and it’s never too late,” Ms Crittenden said.
She warned Nykolyn of the “vicious” and “troubling and distressing cycle” she was in.
“Hopefully you get the assistance you need to get your life on track.”
Nykolyn was convicted of all three charges: larceny, enter enclosed land/premises without lawful excuse and enter building/land with intent to commit indictable offence.
However she faced a penalty only for the enter building/land charge.
She was sentenced to 14 months in jail with a non parole period of seven months.
