Change of habit so easy

Sooner or later it will become second nature to grab your bags when you walk out the door

TODAY The Daily Examiner teams up with dirtgirl and Clarence Valley Council with a pact to make not only the Clarence Valley single-use plastic bag free but the whole state.

The rather ambitious plan has to start somewhere and while we three will work together in the coming months to get thing moving along, the first step in the right direction can happen right now.

Our feature story is encouraging residents and businesses to share their plastic bag habits with the council through a simple survey. It's pretty easy to do. I've done it, The DEX and our staff are getting behind it too because, let's face it, what have we got to lose except a lazy habit that quite frankly can easily be solved with a simple change of mindset.

So try this next time you are heading out to get your groceries. When you grab your car keys think of dirtgirl on our front page with her cloth bags. That's it.

Sooner or later it will become second nature to grab your bags when you walk out the door. Otherwise keep a plentiful supply in your boot on rotation for the odd time you get stuck without one.

As dirtgirl's co-creator Cate McQuillen says, there's no reason to wait until the supermarkets force you to remember in July. Do it now and encourage your mates to do the same.

Before long we will look back at single-use plastic bags and shake our heads wondering "what were we thinking?”
