Neighbours tell of drama after Grafton police shooting

One neighbour heard banging, and saw a man kick a back door in at the home the night before police shot a man wielding a machete – others say it’s a “pretty quiet area”.

One woman who lives just a few doors along from where a man was shot in Grafton said “it’s a pretty quiet area” but another resident saw a man kicking in a door the night before.

A critical incident investigation is underway after police shot a man at a Smith Street home on Tuesday after he allegedly confronted them with a machete.

Officers attended the home about midday in response to an alleged aggravated break and enter.

There they found a 25-year-old man who had barricaded himself inside a room.

Officers negotiated with him before he allegedly confronted them with a machete.

During the confrontation, an officer discharged their firearm, with the man sustaining an injury to his stomach and arm.

One neighbour, who would not give her name, has lived there since 1978 and said she’s never had any issues.

“I knew something was going on but I didn’t take any notice and then I heard two shots,” she said calmly, speaking through her front screen door.

“I’m not one to go sticky beaking into other people’s business. Most of them aren’t home – most work. There are a few new neighbours but I don’t really know them.”

Another man who lives nearby but did not wish to be named said he came home at 7pm and knew something had happened with police cars blocking the street. He has lived there for about two years adding: “I think it’s a good area”.

But another neighbour who lives in an area behind the house said she heard loud banging at around 1.30am on the morning of the shooting.

She woke to see a man kicking a back door down. On Wednesday morning police had not yet spoken to her.

On Wednesday afternoon a NSW Police spokesperson said no charges have been laid in relation to the incident.

After the shooting the man was taken to hospital in a stable condition. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
