Police tasered a machete-wielding man but it proved ineffective as he was wrapped in a doona - so they shot him.

That brought an end to a terrifying stand-off after the man had barricaded himself inside a Grafton home and threatened police.

Jayden Davis, 25, of Casino, appeared via audio visual link at Grafton Local Court earlier this week.

He has pleaded guilty to a string of charges including three counts of contravening an apprehended violence order (AVO), destroying property, break and enter, entering a home with the intention of committing an indictable offence and using a weapon to prevent arrest.

Documents tendered to court lay out how he had wrapped himself in a doona and confronted police with a machete after barricading himself inside a home on May 31.

The court heard at the time of the offences Davis was subject to an AVO, which was made to protect his former partner.

Police were called three times to a Grafton address in response to reports that Davis was breaching an AVO by being there.

The AVO was granted by the court on May 24 — but in less than a week Davis would breach it three times by breaking into the Grafton home of his former partner.

Davis’ former partner heard him in the backyard of her house telling the dog to be quiet, before he walked to the front yard and kicked the door open on May 30.

Police soon arrived and Davis left the house - but returned at 10.30pm that day, entering through the closed back door and asking the victim: “Why did you call the police?”, the court heard.

“As police arrived (Davis) ran through the back door of the house and jumped the fence, fleeing the location,” police facts state.

The very next day, Davis returned to the house around midday, but when police arrived to arrest him the 25-year-old chose not to flee.

“(Davis) barricaded himself inside a bedroom, armed with a machete,” police facts state.

“Police engaged in negotiations with (Davis) over a significant period of hours outside the bedroom.

“(He) made several threats to use the machete against police.”

The court heard around 2pm Davis left the bedroom, still armed with the machete and wrapped in a doona.

“Police called upon (Davis) to drop the machete numerous times, (he) did not and continued to walk towards police,” court documents state.

“Police deployed a taser, which was ineffective due to the doona.

“(Davis) moved towards police who discharged their firearm, shooting him … (he) dropped to the floor immediately after being shot.”

The court heard Davis was treated at the scene and taken to a Gold Coast hospital before being extradited to NSW and charged.

He is due to return to court for sentencing on June 6.
