Sports enthusiasts visiting Iluka may have a brand-new place to stay if a development application currently before Clarence Valley Council gets the green light.
Iluka Bowls Club submitted the proposal earlier this year with the goal of turning a block of club-owned land at 75-79 Spencer Street, adjacent to the Iluka sports oval, into a 12-room ancillary motel.
Club general manager Nicola Donsworth said the motel will serve as accommodation for those attending the club for specific events or functions.
“Many clubs have gone in this direction especially if the accommodation is close by or ideally as in our case, just across the road,” she said.
“It's convenient for club goers with everything they require within walking distance - a game of bowls, food, drinks, and entertainment – it’s a great drawcard especially for travelling lawn bowlers.”
Featuring a simple L-shaped single-story design and 12 off-street parking spaces, construction is estimated to cost $500,000.
It’s all part of the club’s plan to secure income diversification.
“There is pressure on clubs, especially bowling clubs, to stay relevant and keep attracting patronage in a highly competitive hospitality market,” she said.
“Clubs are important to their communities and it’s our responsibility to keep our club in a financially sound position to ensure its future viability. The motel idea was the best option for our club after careful consideration of other possibilities.”
Members of the public have until 4pm, September 10 to make any submissions on the proposal: DA2021/0613.
