Coffs-Clarence police are appealing for information after a horror alleged machete attack took place on a popular Grafton street.

Grafton police are on the hunt for an offender who allegedly cut off a man’s fingers with a machete.

Emergency services responded to reports of an assault involving a machete on Duke Street near the intersection of Pound Street about 1.20pm on Tuesday, according to a NSW Police statement.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a 24-year-old man at the scene for serious hand injuries and he was taken to Grafton Hospital.

It is understood the alleged assailant severed the man’s fingers, according to a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman.

The 24-year-old was later flown to John Hunter Hospital.

Coffs-Clarence police established a crime scene and have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

They believe a red Subaru may have been seen on Duke St around the time of the incident and are asking anyone with dashcam footage or information to contact Grafton Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333-000.
