AUSTRALIAN troops will be in Afghanistan for three more years, a senior commander says.

The Australian commander of operations in the Middle East and Afghanistan, Air Vice Marshal Tim Innes, told the ABC yesterday that Australian troops remained focused on training Afghani forces.

Australia has had a military presence in Afghanistan for 15 years - primarily in a training and support role. Air Vice Marshal Innes said Islamic State had moved into Afghanistan and suicide bombings were increasingly common.
