The NSW government has paved the way for a metro rail station at Pyrmont for the state’s $20 billion metro west line under its plan to revitalise the peninsula as an economic hub.

The Berejiklian government is set to announce its Pyrmont development strategy this week, formalising the Premier’s declaration last year that the peninsula was “open for business”.

It is understood the strategy will outline how the delivery of jobs and investment in Pyrmont is contingent on “world standard public transport” – a clear signal, or green light, for the underground station.

On official terms, plans for a metro station at Pyrmont are still being investigated but the plan will make it clear that high level transport options are critical to the peninsula flourishing.

It is understood the draft strategy presents a 20 year vision, and makes the assumption of a metro station with the view the transport hub would impact the peninsula's economic potential.

The government has sped up the planning process for the region as part of its commitment to fast track planning amid COVID.

One source said the strategy would find ways to protect heritage elements of Pyrmont, while still taking strides to boost key development precincts.

There is a strong desire among senior government ministers for the site to be seen as a global destination complementing the CBD.

The government launched the planning review for the region last year after a controversial rejection of a proposed $530 million tower by the state’s independent planning commission.

Ms Berejiklian said a the time she saw an opportunity to transform Pyrmont and the western harbour precinct into a tourist destination.

She said she believed Pyrmont and the western harbour precinct could be treated “for the first time” as “the gateway to the CBD”.
