The contaminated mulch crisis gripping Sydney continues to expand as more sites tainted by asbestos are identified.
Schools, hospitals, shopping centres and public parks have all been identified as contaminated sites since asbestos was first detected at Rozelle Parklands on January 10.
Asbestos is a naturally-occurring fibrous material used widely in construction in Australia up until it was phased out in the 1980s due to the discovery of chronic health issues caused by its use.
Mulch used in landscaping at each site has since been traced to manufacturer Greenlife Resource Facility.
The state’s Environmental Protection Authority said the contaminated mulch was not available to the general public, but onsold through “multiple layers of distribution” to building companies and landscapers.
