Western Sydney is bracing for a freezing start on Wednesday, with Penrith forecast to plunge to just 2C as icy mornings grip the city and widespread frost sweeps across regional NSW.

Sydneysiders are being urged to rug up as a burst of winter chill settles over the state this week, with some suburbs to wake to frost-covered mornings and near-freezing conditions.
Penrith is set to endure a teeth-chattering low of just 2C on Wednesday, and 3C on Thursday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology — the coldest temperatures forecast in the Sydney basin.
Meanwhile, across regional NSW, residents are also being warned to brace for freezing mornings.
In Cooma, Bombala and Goulburn temperatures are forecast to dip to 1C or below, with widespread frost expected in elevated areas.
It is expected to feel even colder, at 0.8C.
Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains shivered through a chilly start.
However, residents near Sydney’s CBD can look forward to a string of golden winter days, with crisp blue skies and brisk early mornings that bite, especially out west where frost is expected to settle.
On Tuesday, the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts a maximum temperature of 18C with a minimum 5 per cent chance of rain.
Morning frost is expected in the western areas, with light winds prevailing throughout the day.
The trend continues into Wednesday, with a forecast high of 16C and similar conditions.
Thursday and Friday will see temperatures ranging between 17C and 18C, maintaining the pattern of sunny days and cool mornings.
Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday is expected to reach a pleasant 19C, while Sunday may see a slight increase to 20C, with a 20 per cent chance of a shower.
The UV index is predicted to remain low throughout the week, with a rating of 2, indicating minimal sun protection is necessary.
In comparison, coastal areas were slightly milder, with Gosford feeling like 11C and Newcastle at 9C.
Sydney’s city centre woke to a brisk start as well today, with the apparent temperature at Observatory Hill sitting at just 9C.
While not as cold as the outer suburbs, the chill was still enough to warrant a warm jacket for the morning commute.
