Body found off Sydney cliffs during Lilie James murder manhunt

Paul Thijssen came from half-a-world away, but had become an integral part of the St Andrew’s Cathedral School community.

Born in the Netherlands, he started at the Sydney school as a Year 10 student, but by the time he had reached his HSC year was considered a top leader, and named captain of the school’s cricket team as well as a prefect.

A mass search is now underway for the 24-year-old man wanted over the death of Lilie James.

The couple had recently split after Ms James called time on their five-week relationship with police probing if that was the reason for the altercation, however those answers may never be determined with a search of the cliffs along Vaucluse by a PolAir helicopter showing no signs of Thijssen.

A young man himself, Thijssen had moved to Sydney from the Netherlands in 2015.

He graduated in 2017 and according to his LinkedIn account remained in Sydney for two years, during which time he stayed at St Andrews where he worked as an assistant in the sports department.

Thijssen then returned to the Netherlands for 12 months, before once again flying back to Australia.

For the past three years he had worked at St Andrew’s Cathedral School, as well as picking up a position at St Vincent’s School in Potts Point as a hockey coach.

In a letter to parents, St Vincent’s Acting Principal Elizabeth Brooks said her “thoughts and prayers” are with all those involved.

“We are awaiting confirmation from the Police that one of the individuals involved in the events at St Andrew’s Cathedral School overnight was one of our seasonal hockey coaches,” Ms Brooks wrote.

“We are not privy to the Police investigation, but should confirmation be provided, or should we gain any additional relevant information, we will communicate with you again.

“My thoughts and prayers are with all families impacted by this distressing situation.”
