In a move expected to be challenged by the high-profile council figure, ALP officials last night voted to nullify Mr Carbone’s membership for contravening party rules.

Under regulations governing candidates, members must not run against endorsed Labor candidates.

Mr Carbone has been campaigning as an independent after failing to win party endorsement to run for Labor at the September local government elections.

The controversial mayor subsequently teamed up with suspended Liberal councillor, Dai Le.

Ms Le was suspended from the party for 10 years for running against a Liberal Party candidate.

The pair have been campaigning strongly against endorsed Labor mayoral candidate Del Bennett, with posters lining the streets of Fairfield.

Mr Carbone was first elected in 2008, before becoming the popularly-elected mayor in 2012.

His brother Pat Carbone is a well-known western Sydney developer and property owner who ran for the No Land Tax Party.

A party spokeswoman said the rules stated expulsion was to be considered in cases where candidates ran against endorsed tickets.

“Mr Carbone placed himself outside of the Labor Party by running as an independent against a Labor-endorsed ticket,” she said.
