Man charged over break in after teen’s death at Ingleburn house party brawl
A man has been charged after a fight over “something petty” at a 16th birthday party spilt onto a south west Sydney street and turned fatal on Friday night. 18-year-old Alex Ioane was declared dead after suffering serious head injuries.
A man will face court accused of running from police and breaking into a unit following the death of a man at a 16th birthday party in Sydney’s south west.
The 19-year-old was arrested on Friday night after police were called to reports of a brawl at a house on Chester Rd at Ingleburn which had spilt onto the street.
18-year-old Alex Ioane was found on the road with serious head injuries, he couldn’t be revived and was declared dead at Liverpool Hospital.
A friend of the teenager said they want justice over his death, revealing the fight started over “something petty” and escalated before ending in tragedy.
Officers seized several weapons from the scene including a baseball bat and golf club, along with wooden and metal poles.
Four 19-year-old men were arrested and taken to Campbelltown Police Station where three were released pending further inquiries and a Cabramatta man charged with destroy or damage property, and enter prescribed premises of any person without lawful excuse.
Police allege the man ran from officers and forced his way into a unit on Chester Rd before being arrested nearby.
He was refused bail to appear in court today.
Alex’s friend Freda Tuese spoke to media before giving a statement at Campbelltown Police Station on Saturday.
“Alex was a joker and that’s what we loved about him,” the 18-year-old said.
“We all went to school together.
“He was bubbly, he was funny he was always happy. His family are amazing, he was really loved.
“He showed that (love) to people he cared about, especially his boys.”
Ms Tuese said Alex’s family is in shock.
She said they had been celebrating a female friend’s 16th birthday party when a fight began.
“We obviously did not know that this was going to happen,” she said.
“There was a fight inside and then it escalated onto the street.”
She said the fight was over “something petty, something little that happened inside the party”.
“We want justice for Alex,” she said. “And just no more violence or drama.”
This comes as police revealed they were confronted with a “chaotic” scene when responding to reports of a brawl.
“This is a very tragic set of circumstances. We have got a young 18-year-old boy who goes out for the evening and who has been killed in such a brutal manner,” NSW Police Chief Inspector Mick Maroney said outside Campbelltown Police Station.
“You can understand they (his family) would be devastated.
“This is not a regular occurrence in this area. This is a one off thing.”
Police spent Friday night questioning the four teenagers over the 18-year-old’s death, with two of those men later leaving Campbelltown Police Station dressed in white forensics overalls.
He said between 50 and 80 people had attended with party, with several cars coming and going from the scene.
“That is why we are appealing to the public for those people who were in the area between 9pm and 9.40pm who may have had dashcam, may have filmed, taken photographs of anything,” Insp Maroney said.
“We would like to hear from you as a matter of urgency.
“And we would like dashcam because this incident spilt out onto the roadway.
“There may have been vehicles that went past during that time and may have witnessed something.
Neighbour Wayne Jamieson described the scene in the road as “turmoil” last night.
“At about 6pm, two girls came knocking on the door saying we are having a party tonight next door and it will be noisy but we are going to shut it down at 10pm,” neighbour Wayne Jamieson said.
“The next minute it was turmoil.”
His partner, Gayle, saw the flashing lights just before 10pm and walked down her driveway to have a look at the street.
“When I went down there was police everywhere and a big boy laying in the middle of the road,” she said.
“The paramedics were standing around him but they weren’t hurrying.”
Mrs Jamieson said there was about 40 people standing around in the park and the riot squad arrived.
“His poor family I feel so sorry for his poor family,” she said.
“He has come to a party to celebrate and it’s ended like this.”
The operation involved officers from Campbelltown Police Area Command, with assistance from the Public Order and Riot Squad, the Dog Unit, Rescue Squad, Police Transport Command, and officers from other South-West Metropolitan Region Police Area Commands.
A crime scene was established as inquiries by officers from Campbelltown City Police Area Command and the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad continue.
Chester Rd was closed between Percy St and Gertrude Ave as the scene was forensically examined by officers.
