CONTROVERSIAL former NSW police minister Mike Gallacher has resigned from the Parliament.

CONTROVERSIAL former police minister Mike Gallacher has resigned from the Parliament.

In a statement, Mr Gallacher said he visited the Governor “a short time ago” and tendered his resignation from the Legislative Council.

“This brings to a close more than 37 years of public service including 21 years as a Member of Parliament and 16 years as a police officer,” he said.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the former Police Minister was a “key member of the team”.

Mike Gallacher has quit NSW Parliament.

“I have always given my utmost to fulfil the roles and duties entrusted to me to serve our community with the highest distinction and determination, no matter how challenging.”

Mr Gallacher recently returned to the partyroom after spending time out in the cold. He was booted from the frontbench under former premier Mike Baird after he was named as part of ICAC’s Operation Spicer.

“I leave Parliament today, proud of what I have achieved, confident that many of the tough decisions I led in Government will continue to serve this State and its people into the future,” he said.

ICAC found Mr Gallacher tried to evade the law and was an “untruthful witness”.

But ICAC did not recommend charges be considered by the DPP.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian issued a statement shortly after Mr Gallacher’s.

“I would like to acknowledge Mike Gallacher’s many years of service to the Liberal Party and the NSW Parliament,” she said.

“Mike was a key member of the team which returned the Coalition to power in 2011 and served as a minister in the O’Farrell and Baird governments.

“I wish him and his family all the best in the future.”
