A second former immigration detainee has been charged over an aggravated burglary in Western Australia.
Kimbengere Gosoge, 42, from the African nation of Burundi, was arrested earlier this week by Australian Federal Police in Perth after breaching his curfew conditions.
Mr Gosoge was one of the cohort who was released in the wake of the High Court’s decision to ban indefinite detention of failed asylum seekers who refuse to return to their country of origin.
But it can now be revealed that Mr Gosoge has been on bail over a violent incident alleged to have occurred at a hotel in Perth in early March.
During the alleged attack a man in his 40s was held against his will, threatened and assaulted by two men not known to him.
As a result Mr Gosoge was charged with Aggravated Robbery; Deprivation of Liberty; and Assault Occasioning Bodily Harm.
He was due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on May 23, 2024.
At the time he charged Mr Gosoge should have been returned to immigration detention but according to sources in the federal government, Western Australian authorities failed to tell the ABF that he had been charged.
More to come.
