The rest of the city was in lockdown but some cheeky football fans were out, loud and proud after Italy‘s victory in the Euro 2020 final.
In Leichhardt, Italian football tragics were out in force with seemingly little concern for the lockdown orders - at least compared to their concern for the penalty shootout.
After Italy triumphed over England early on Monday morning, local Leichhardt shopkeepers took their small celebration to the streets to wave a flag and sing songs while wearing masks.
Local police kept a watchful eye on the brief celebrations on Norton St, speaking quickly to the pair of business owners before the two went back to work on an otherwise quiet Sydney morning.
Despite the men breaking the Covid rules, Leichhardt PAC Inspector Darren Laing said no Public Health Order PIN notices, infringements or fines were issued for the “minor” celebration.
“We have two shop owners from opposing sides of the street come out at the end of the game … they did a bit of singing, had masks on, someone drove past with a flag then they all went back to their business,” Insp Laing said.
“There were no move-ons, breaches or nothing of the sort … it was a brief, slight celebration which police observed.”
While countless other Italian households across the city may also have been celebrating the win, no fines or disturbances have been reported.
The victory, which came down to a penalty shootout, saw Italy snatch the crown from England 3-2 to continue Britain‘s 55-year drought in the European competition.
