Sydney will soon have a new harbourside park with 1.85ha of land at Barangaroo to be opened up to the public for the first time in the coming months.
The temporary opening of the site will occur at the same time as a committee chaired by former prime minister Paul Keating works on the final design for the park, which will link up to Barangaroo Reserve.
Plans for the park are being unveiled as part of the next stage of the transformation of the precinct, with the state government also revealing the new design for the expansive, below-ground concrete event space, “Cutaway”.
Cities Minister Rob Stokes said the new harbour park and revamped Cutaway would build on the more than 8ha of public open space and exciting programs of art and events at Barangaroo.
He said the park and Cutaway are expected to attract both tourists and locals, with the site soon to be linked to the Metro line.
Sitting on the harbour’s edge within Central Barangaroo, the park is bounded by Barangaroo Ave to the east, Sydney Harbour and Wulugul Walk to the west, Nawi Cove to the north and Crown Resort to the south.
“What was a vacant container terminal is now a thriving residential, commercial and entertainment hub, soon to be linked to a world-class Metro line,” Mr Stokes said.
“The world’s best cities aren’t just liveable and workable, they’re also beautiful. The new harbour park and revamped Cutaway will be the type of public spaces that locals are proud of and visitors are drawn to.”
Mr Stokes said while the design and construction of the park would take some time, the space dedicated to the park would be opened temporarily with pop-ups later this year.
Mr Keating said public spaces were the heart of a city’s “function and beauty”.
