Exclusive: NSW firefighters are begging the federal government to lock in the long-term future of one of the state’s most crucial aerial firefighting bases, as they watch in horror as California burns.
The Rural Fire Service is calling for the government to guarantee the future of Richmond RAAF base, currently a key base for large air tankers.
Since 2015, Richmond RAAF Base has been the home of large air tankers used to fight bushfires, however, the base is not permanent, worrying fireys.
A spokesperson for RFS called for the government to lock in the base for future use.
“At present, there is no long-term federal commitment to guarantee continued access to RAAF Base Richmond for firefighting purposes. This lack of assurance raises concerns about the future of this critical infrastructure,” said the spokesperson.
The base is favoured by fireys because of its “unique advantages.”
Unlike regular air bases, the site has none of the restrictions typically imposed on regular commercial aviation, “allowing uninterrupted operations during emergencies,” while its “strategic location” allows fireys to rapidly respond to fires across NSW and the broader east coast.
“The RFS and RAAF Richmond have always maintained an excellent working relationship, and we are deeply grateful for the support and collaboration we have received over the years,” said a spokesperson.
“The base’s personnel and facilities have consistently accommodated our needs, enabling us to respond effectively to emergencies.
“However, to ensure the continued success of these operations, the RFS would be supportive of the development of a long-term agreement that assures access to this valuable facility.
“The RFS believes it is vital to secure a long-term solution that ensures continued access to RAAF Base Richmond,” said a spokesperson.
The RFS said they would welcome discussions with the federal government to “achieve an agreement that safeguards the operational capacity of the base for firefighting purposes.”
Defence stopped short of making a commitment but said it would consult with stakeholders and that it values its relationship with the Rural Fire Service.
