School authorities are assessing the damage after a fire broke out at Waverley College in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Friday.
Ten people including four students and six staff had to be evacuated from the Birrell St school shortly after 2.22pm.
The fire is believed to have started in the school’s technological and applied studies (woodwork) room, before embers got into the dust extraction system.
“The fire brigade and the police did a great job and have ensured that everyone is safe,” principal Graham Leddie said.
“We are still unsure of the damage but it does not appear to be too bad. There was an awful lot of black smoke.”
The students who were onsite were working on their Year 12 practical projects.
The school has a long list of famous alumni including TV personalities Scott Cam and Costa Georgiadis as well as former NRL player Luke Ricketson and former Wallaby Owen Finegan.
