Filly of champion mare Winx and stallion Pierro expected to breaking records when she hits the saleyards next month

An untried, untested, unbroken filly is set to smash all existing records for the sale price of a yearling. But this is not just any yearling but the first foal from Australia’s greatest ever mare.

Winx’s best racing moments

An untried, untested, unbroken filly is about to smash all existing records for the sale price of a yearling and set the horse racing world alight.

This is not just any yearling but the first foal from Australia’s greatest ever mare, Winx.

Coolmore’s Tom Magnier has raised the filly on his stud in the Hunter Valley and believes “records will be broken” when she steps into the auction ring at the Inglis Easter Sales in two weeks time.

“When that Winx filly goes to the sales it will be like Taylor Swift going into the stadium in Sydney,” he said. “That atmosphere is going to be incredible.”

The record sale price for a yearling is $2.6m and because of her pedigree, her father is triple crown winning stallion Pierro, most expect that record to be broken.

“It’s equivalent to Roger Federer in tennis or, in the car world, selling Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, everyone would want it,” Mr Magnier said. “She’s the greatest filly Australia has ever had.”

On Easter Monday Mr Magnier will be among those turning up at the sale ring at Warwick Farm with his cheque book tucked in his back pocket. “I’d be crazy to say I wasn’t interested in her,” he said.

Winx captured the heart of a generation and became famous all over the world. Inglis bloodstock chief executive Sebastian Hutch said the sale had attracted global interest.

“There is tremendous awareness in the market and the general public as to the significance of the horse,” he said.

“Major blood stock investors around the world in the US, Europe, the Middle East, Japan and certain parts of Asia have expressed some interest in her.”

Winx set a world record with 25 top level group one victories to earn more than $26 million in prize money and ranking as the world’s best horse on turf and co-ranking as the world’s best racehorse.

Co-owner of the legendary mare Peter Tighe said the filly was promising because she showed the same traits as her world beating mother.

“It’s uncanny,” he said. “She’s the spitting image of her mother. We were looking at pictures of Winx as a foal and they look as identical as you can. The characteristics and mannerisms are also the same.

“She is unique and has her own personality but it is very similar to her mother’s.”

Mr Tighe said the decision to sell the filly had been the topic of long conversation between the owners who were very conscious of the enormous public love for Winx.

“We enjoyed the time with Winx as many other people did,” he said.

“We thought a good way to be able to keep the story going would be if we offered her for sale.”

Mr Tighe said there had been huge interest from around the world which has “really started to generate a big story again which is great for racing” in Australia.

He hopes that no matter who buys the filly she will stay and race in Australia. And just because she is being sold he is not discounting jumping back on for the ride.

“It gives the breeding industry around the world. the opportunity to buy into it,” he said.

“It doesn’t restrict any of us from being involved in the ownership, if we desire to buy back in.”
