Federal MP Kate Thwaites postpones wedding due to COVID-19

Federal Labor MP Kate Thwaites was one of many hopeful brides who had to cancel their nuptials due to the strict lockdown regulations put in place due to the coronavirus crisis. But she’s hoping she will still be able to get married soon.

Coronavirus: Abandoned Sydney from above

Federal Labor MP Kate Thwaites was among hundreds of brides forced to cancel her wedding last weekend in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

The first-term MP was due to say “I do” to her beau Daniel in front of more than 100 guests – including some federal colleagues – at the Rosanna Bowling Club in her Melbourne electorate of Jagajaga.

But the former television and radio news reporter pulled the pin six days before her big day after more than six months of planning.

“We were all organised,” Thwaites told The Sauce.

“We really wanted it to be a celebration of families and friends and that wasn’t going to be the case.”

Thwaites said she has told the local businesses she would postpone not cancel their services.

“They are ready to go when we are,” she said.

CORONA CARNIES

Coronavirus has inflicted unexpected financial hardship on pubs, clubs and beauticians who have all been forced to close their doors to customers in the past week.

But former Labor leader Bill Shorten has found another bunch of workers feeling the impact of COVID-19.

Carnival folk.

Shorten — no doubt driven by honourable intentions and not relevance deprivation — took to Twitter on Thursday to ask Australians to “spare a thought for the woodchoppers, stunt bikers and travelling showpeople’’ whose livelihood has ground to a halt.

While Shorten’s appeal copped criticism online and raised eyebrows among colleagues, The Sauce notes both the Victorian Showmen’s Guild and the Melbourne Showgrounds are within Shorten’s Melbourne electorate.

Best of luck to them getting through this horrible time regardless.

Hazmat BUNNIES

With some government staff still having to remain at work, two workers at the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Agricultural Institute in Orange decided it was still possible to spread some Easter cheer — without spreading the virus.

Dressed in personal protective clothing — complete with bunny ears — staff wandered around the department, offering chocolate eggs to those left in the building.

When it comes to animal viruses, DPI staff are experts having dealt with avian flu and the recent equine Hendra virus.

HOT BUNS

There may only be skeleton staff left in NSW Parliament House, but that hasn’t stopped the catering crews laying out a daily spread of freshly-baked hot cross buns for MPs and staff who have to come in.

At $2 per bun — $10 for six — Macquarie St sources say they’ve been flying out the door.

Meanwhile, Canberra pollies and staff were being offered food delivery services from parliamentary catering to their door during sitting days.

You gotta feed the troops.
