The father of a young man at the centre of a massive police operation in Sydney’s south west yesterday says that his son was just “doing science experiments.”
Police converged on the small home on a Argyle Street, Picton at 9.30am after concerns were raised that there may be acetone-based chemicals at the property.

It is understood that a young man living at the address had been in contact with a person online, who was allegedly found with illegal chemicals by police in Port Hacking last week.
“Emerging from the home at around 9.30 this morning to move a car, a man who said he was the young man’s father told The Daily Telegraph that his son had done nothing wrong.”
“They found nothing,” he said.
“He’s just a kid doing science experiments … there’s a science kit in the backyard.”
Despite the presence of Hazmat, police, paramedics and firefighters, nothing of interest was discovered throughout the day-long operation.
A neighbour said that the family who owned the property was “very nice”.
“When I came home yesterday I was shocked,” she said.
“It brings a bad name to Picton you know?”
“They are very nice people,” another neighbour said.
“There are never any dramas.”
One neighbour said that the young man lived at the home with his mother and stepfather.
It is not yet known whether the police operation will recommence today.
A NSW State Crime Command spokeswoman said that police had concluded the search of the Picton property, however investigations into the matter will continue.
No arrests were made and no charges were laid during the operation.
